Domaine Filliatreau Saumur-Champigny Vieilles Vignes 2001 (Library Release)
Founded in 1967 by Paul Filliatreau, the domaine helped redefine Saumur-Champigny with innovations like stainless steel fermentation and a focus on pure Cabernet Franc.
The Vieilles Vignes cuvée comes from 5 hectares of 60–70-year-old vines around Chaintres in Dampierre-sur-Loire, planted on shallow clay-sandy loam over Turonian tuffeau chalk. These soils drain well yet hold enough water to moderate yields and produce concentrated fruit.
The 2001 vintage, harvested by hand and fully destemmed, was fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel, given 24 days on skins, and aged 9 months in tank. The final wine is 90% free-run juice with a touch of press wine.
A cooler, lighter year, 2001 has evolved into a lean, perfumed, and energetic expression of Loire Cabernet Franc—filigreed and persistent, with the charm of mature old-vine fruit.
