El Güel Mezcal is produced by a small cooperative directed and overseen by maestro mezcalero Alberto Morales of Wahaka Mezcal. The cooperative brings together budding, young mezcaleros from San Dionisio Ocotepec, Oaxaca. The cooperative’s goal is to produce an artisanal mezcal using old school, sustainable methods with an increasing number of mezcaleros from the community — many that don’t have the resources to export or create their own brand. As opposed to succumbing to the pressure of incorporating industrial techniques, the cooperative will continue to add local producers paying fair prices for mezcal.

About the producer
In mezcal tradition, the craft is passed from father to son, generation to generation. Wahaka owner Alberto Morales learned how to perfect mezcal from his father, and his father from his, going back five generations. Now, he stewards a sacred lineage of mezcal craftmanship. With his family working beside him, Alberto is preserving the art of artisanal mezcal for future generations.

Wahaka is more a family than a brand. There’s something special about a mezcal that’s personally made by the owner in the company, with his family working by his side. Alberto Morales is a maestro mezcalero, an honor earned only after decades of investment in a craft. Yet, he’s just as interested in ensuring the world has the opportunity to enjoy true artisanal mezcal.
