RyeLaw: The Scottish Rye Whisky That Does It Differently

RyeLaw isn’t just another whisky—it’s a statement. Made from 53% malted rye and 47% malted barley, RyeLaw is the only whisky in the world distilled using malted rye in a Lomond Hill still, a copper pot still with six copper bubble cap plates in its neck. This rare still allows for “precision distilling,” pinpointing and collecting the exact flavour peak at 72% ABV—no more, no less.

A Scottish Whisky with Rye Soul

RyeLaw defies expectations and rewrites tradition. While it meets the criteria to be classified as Rye Whiskey in the U.S. (with over 51% rye, distilled below 80% ABV, and matured in new charred oak barrels), it remains proudly and legally a Single Grain Scotch Whisky—because that’s where it’s made, and that’s where its heart lies.

A Heritage Reimagined

Though rye is uncommon in Scotch whisky today, it’s not without precedent. Records as far back as Alfred Barnard (1886) and the Royal Commission of 1908/09 mention rye’s role in Scotch whisky history. RyeLaw pays homage to this heritage while forging a new path in contemporary distilling.

A Taste Like No Other

Expect a whisky of striking character. The rye lends a peppery spice and aromatic lift, while maturation in new charred oak barrels provides layers of vanilla sweetness, toast, and mature oak. It’s bold, balanced, and brilliantly complex.

From the Cromarty Firth to the World

The 2017 vintage—the first release—was born from just one week of production, with grain sourced from two Highland farms: Nonikiln and Rosskeen, grown by Martin MacDonald and David Gill. The rye variety was Magnifico, the barley Concerto, and both were malted by Munton’s. Only 200 casks of this vintage exist, making it an exceptionally rare expression.
