Rhum Barbancourt Volcanic Cane is a fascinating limited-edition expression that brings together two very different spirits traditions: 15-year-old Haitian sugarcane rum and the smoky peat of Islay whisky casks.

Distilled in 2008 and limited to just 4,850 bottles worldwide, Volcanic Cane begins with mature Barbancourt rum aged in ex-Cognac and ex-Bourbon casks before receiving a final maturation in casks previously used for peated whisky from Islay, Scotland.

The result is not simply a smoky rum. Instead, the peated cask provides a contrasting layer to Barbancourt’s mature fruit, cane sweetness and oak—a meeting of Haitian sugarcane and Islay peat.

Haiti Meets Islay

Founded in Haiti in 1862, Rhum Barbancourt has built its identity around sugarcane juice distillation and extended maturation. Volcanic Cane takes that traditional foundation in a decidedly experimental direction.

After approximately 15 years of maturation, the rum spends its final period in peated whisky casks. Smoke, earth and spice meet tropical and dried fruit, creating an expression that should be particularly intriguing for both serious rum drinkers and fans of peated Scotch whisky.

The critical question with any peat-cask finish is whether the peat complements the underlying spirit or overwhelms it. Here, the maturity and structure of the 15-year-old Barbancourt provide enough character to stand alongside the smoke rather than disappear beneath it.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Dark chocolate and cacao lead into dried fruit, vanilla and tarry peat smoke, with the mature rum remaining underneath.

Palate: Cooked pear, pineapple and dried banana develop alongside citrus, spice and earthy smoke. The peat provides contrast without completely obscuring the fruit and mature cane character.

Finish: Long and warming, with lingering wood smoke, walnut, cinnamon, pepper, oak, caramel and beeswax.
