Rhum Barbancourt Cane Blossom 15 Year Old Mizunara Cask Finish — 45% ABV
Rhum Barbancourt Cane Blossom 15 Year Old is an unusual limited-edition Haitian rum that brings together two distinctive traditions: Barbancourt’s mature sugarcane spirit and Japanese Mizunara oak.
Where its sibling, Volcanic Cane, explores the darker, smoky influence of peated Islay whisky casks, Cane Blossom travels in almost the opposite direction. Here, the emphasis is on aromatics, elegance and integration, using rare Mizunara oak to add floral, spicy and exotic wood notes to mature Barbancourt rum.
Haiti Meets Japan
Founded in Haiti in 1862, Rhum Barbancourt has developed a distinctive style based on sugarcane juice rather than the molasses commonly used by many Caribbean rum producers.
For Cane Blossom, mature 15-year-old Barbancourt is given an additional finish in Mizunara oak from Hokkaido, Japan.
Mizunara has become highly prized in the whisky world for the unusual aromatic qualities it can impart. Rather than simply contributing the familiar vanilla and caramel associated with American oak, Mizunara can develop notes reminiscent of sandalwood, incense, exotic spice and fragrant wood.
The intriguing question here is how those characteristics interact with mature Haitian cane spirit.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Fresh sugarcane and delicate floral aromas lead into jasmine, white fruit and fragrant oak.
Palate: Round and elegant, with pear, lychee and other fresh white-fruit notes complemented by gentle spice, sandalwood and polished oak.
Finish: Long, soft and aromatic, with lingering fruit, floral notes and delicate exotic wood.
A Different Kind of Cask Finish
Cane Blossom is particularly interesting because the cask does not need to shout.
While a heavily peated cask can immediately announce its presence, Mizunara tends to invite a more contemplative approach. The objective is not simply to identify the finishing wood, but to determine what it has changed in the underlying rum.
For whisky drinkers familiar with Mizunara-matured Japanese whisky, Cane Blossom provides an opportunity to experience this celebrated oak against a completely different spirit.
For rum drinkers, the question is even more interesting:
How much can Mizunara change Barbancourt while still allowing Barbancourt to taste like Barbancourt?
Taste it alongside Volcanic Cane and the contrast becomes particularly compelling:
Volcanic Cane — Haiti meets Islay: smoke, fruit and contrast.
Cane Blossom — Haiti meets Japan: flowers, fruit and harmony.
