To our minds (and palates), Linkwood produces some of the most consistent spirit in all of Speyside. You can’t bottle a bad Linkwood — the trick is bottling a spectacular Linkwood, and that, friends, is what we have here. 14 years in 1st Fill Bourbon followed by 4 years in Spanish Oak Oloroso makes for a spectacularly delicious Linkwood.

Color: Polished Copper

Nose: Warm and comforting with pecan pie, Muscovado sugar, damp earth, toasted whole wheat bread, chocolate-covered orange peel, and pleasing oak spice.

Palate: Dark earthy notes lead the way — damp earth, pecan pie, charred oak — followed by toasted hazelnuts and penuche fudge.

Finish: Comforting to the very end with ground grey pepper, cocoa powder, and roasted coffee beans.

This charmer called “Williamson” comes from a South Shore Islay distillery whose name we cannot divulge. The spirit honors Bessie Williamson, distillery manager and owner from 1954–1972 — a wonderful tribute to women in whisky. The style is true to the distillery but noticeably fruitier than the official bottlings.

Nose: Fresh peanuts, slivered almonds, toasted walnuts, cloves, ripe bananas, vanilla ice cream, and a maraschino cherry — with smoke lingering in the background.

Palate: Bright fruit balanced by minerality and cask char: white peach, star fruit, iodine, sea salt crystals, salted caramel, and beach campfire.

Finish: Oily and lingering with sea salt, cloves, iodine, and beach campfire smoke.

Glentauchers is one of our favorite distilleries. The whisky is naturally rich and cereal-sweet, and with age becomes beautifully balanced. Three years in a PX Sherry Barrique adds layers of baking spice, chocolate, and baked apples.

Nose: Poached pears, baked apples, oatmeal, cinnamon, ginger, and gentle oak spice.

Palate: Mouth-coating texture with oak spice and warm cinnamon evolving into buttery almond-croissant notes.

Finish: Long and mellow with cinnamon, oak spice, dark chocolate, and café au lait.

Lochranza distillery produces the Isle of Arran malt, known for its zesty orchard-fruit profile. This cask stays within that wheelhouse but adds apricot, shortbread, and white peach for a very moreish dram.

Knockdhu (home of anCnoc) is one of roughly twenty distilleries still using worm-tub condensers, producing a heavier, oilier spirit. Add four years in Spanish Oak Oloroso and you get a wonderfully chewy dram.

Ruadh Mhor is a richly peated spirit from Glenturret Distillery. The barley is peated to 80 ppm, higher than nearly every distillery on Islay (except Octomore). Highland peat gives a vegetal, earthy style rather than coastal smoke.

Finish: Long and drying with charred oak, dark fruitcake, and amaretti cookies.

Glen Spey may not be widely known, but independent bottlers love uncovering these hidden gems. The spirit is naturally nutty and viscous, and this cask is truly stellar.
