Lagavulin Distiller’s Edition Double Matured in Pedro Ximénez-Seasoned Casks (43% ABV, 750 mL)

The Lagavulin Distiller’s Edition is the poster child of Diageo’s Distiller’s Edition series. Lagavulin’s smoky, medicinal, and phenolic notes marry extraordinarily well with the sweet, syrupy character of PX Sherry.

The Sherry is made from Pedro Ximénez grapes that have been partially rasinated before they are crushed. The result is a sweet, syrupy wine with pronounced dried fruit notes, especially dark raisin and fig. According to Morgan, the Lagavulin-PX finish was the first time a PX Sherry had been used to finish a single malt whisky.

The smoky, medicinal, and phenolic notes on the nose are characteristic of Lagavulin, but these are supplemented with the sweet, dried fruit notes typical of PX sherry. There are additional herbal and brush/forest floor notes, a touch of anise, a hint of dried mint, and cooked cereal aromas.

The whisky is thick and viscous on the palate, with a pronounced palate weight and an oily characteristic. It’s sweet, with cinnamon, pepper, and herbal and cooked cereal notes. The finish is long, peppery, and sweet, with lingering dried fruit, smoky and medicinal notes.

The Diageo’s Distiller’s Edition is an outstanding single malt Scotch whisky collection. The whiskies are perfectly matched to their finishing casks, a combination that has lasted the test of time.
