*On Peat and Personality*

Peat comes in many forms—from the maritime punch of Islay to the myriad unique expressions found across Scotland: Ledaig’s funk, Benriach’s fruit-smoke fusion, the coastal bite of Talisker, the oily depth of Springbank/Longrow, and the newer voices like Torabhaig, Isle of Raasay, and even Arran’s occasional peated work.

Ardmore brings something distinct. For me, it’s savory—almost culinary. It evokes the warm, roasted spice of cumin and coriander seeds. Think of tamarind chutney, but with the tamarind lifted out—just the earthy, toasty base remaining. That character places Ardmore firmly on our short list of single barrels we actively seek—so much so that it once made the final cut at MMD, narrowly edged out by a Ledaig.

Ardmore: The Smoky Soul of the Highlands
Born in 1898 to fuel the fire of Teacher’s Highland Cream, Ardmore is the Highland distillery that defies expectation. While its neighbors lean toward soft, fruity drams, Ardmore walks a bolder path—one veiled in smoke.

This is peat, but not Islay’s ocean-drenched variety. Ardmore’s smoke is earthier, more rugged—like a bonfire crackling on heathered hills. It’s Highland honey laced with ash, toffee wrapped in smoke. Often overlooked, rarely flashy, Ardmore is a quiet rebel—a whisky for those who like their Highlands with a little fire.

Mossburn Vintage Casks No. 6 – Ardmore 2008 (9 Years Old)
An elemental Highland dram wrapped in smoky finesse.

Part of Mossburn’s Vintage Casks series—typically small batches of about ten barrels—this Ardmore was distilled in 2008 and bottled in 2017. A bold, peated Highlander aged in re-used Islay barrels, it delivers rustic complexity with smoky elegance.

Tasting Notes
No coastal influence here, but plenty of peat. Ardmore’s signature phenolic smokiness comes from peated barley fermented in 14 wooden washbacks, then deepened by aging in ex-Islay casks.

Nose
Smoky and savory, with soft woodsmoke rising first. Underneath: vanilla, green apple, and subtle citrus, with a whisper of heather.

Palate
Medium-bodied and creamy. Vanilla and toffee sweetness meet green fruit and a peppery snap. The earthy smoke persists, accented by hints of cloves and woody cinnamon.

Finish
Long, warming, and dry. Sweetness fades into a glow of spice and smoke—balanced and satisfying.
