Catoctin Creek Roundstone Rye – Cask Proof Maple Finished
Virginia, USA | 58% ABV | 100% Rye | Annual Release
100% rye whiskies are rare. This is one you should try.
Founded in 2009 by Becky and Scott Harris, Catoctin Creek® was the first legal distillery in Virginia’s Loudoun County since before Prohibition. Nestled in Purcellville, in the heart of the Loudoun Valley, Catoctin Creek is proudly dedicated to restoring Virginia’s legacy as the birthplace of American whiskey. Today, it produces Virginia’s most awarded whisky: Roundstone Rye.
The name “Catoctin” (pronounced Ka-TOCK-tin) is drawn from regional Native American heritage, derived from “Kittocton,” believed to mean “place of many deer.” It reflects the connection to the land and the eponymous creek that flows past the distillery into the Potomac River and Chesapeake watershed.
Catoctin Creek emphasizes quality from the ground up—sourcing grain and fruit locally, free from pesticides or additives, to ensure the cleanest, most expressive spirits possible.
This Cask Proof Maple Finished edition is a once-a-year release of the celebrated Roundstone Rye, made from a 100% rye mash bill and bottled at cask strength (~58% ABV). It’s finished in barrels that previously held Langdon Wood maple syrup, resulting in a whiskey that is both robust and refined.
Despite its bold strength, this whiskey is remarkably smooth. The maple influence is elegant and balanced, complementing rather than masking the rye’s spicy and earthy core. Tasting notes include burnt sugar, chocolate, tanned leather, and tobacco, all carried on a rich, oily texture.
Founder Scott Harris calls it “dangerously delicious” in a Manhattan—and for good reason. This expression brings together the boldness of cask-strength rye with the lingering warmth of maple in a way that is complex, comforting, and never cloying.
