Calle 23 Criollo El Dos Reposado
Rare Criollo agave. Years in the making. A tequila created by Sophie Decobecq as a gift for her son Eliès.
Calle 23 Criollo El Dos is the long-awaited follow-up to the legendary Calle 23 Criollo Blanco, the 2018 release that became a benchmark bottle for serious tequila enthusiasts.
It begins with Criollo, a rare and difficult-to-grow variant of Blue Weber agave. The plants are smaller, mature slowly and yield considerably less juice. What they can deliver, however, is remarkable concentration, intense aromatics, vegetal sweetness and deep cooked-agave character.
Why El Dos Is So Unusual
The original Criollo Blanco was created in honor of Sophie’s first son, Abel. For her second son, Eliès, Sophie wanted to do something different. She placed Criollo Blanco into used oak barrels on the day Eliès was born and began an aging experiment that would continue for years.
At different stages, portions were removed from oak while others continued maturing through Reposado, Añejo and Extra Añejo territory. Years of blending trials followed.
The final El Dos is predominantly Añejo, followed by Extra Añejo, with a smaller amount of Reposado. Yet the bottle is labeled Reposado because tequila regulations require the youngest component of the blend to determine its age classification.
A trained biologist, Sophie approaches agave and fermentation with the curiosity of a scientist and the instincts of a distiller. El Dos reflects everything she has learned about this difficult agave since creating the original Criollo.
This isn’t simply an aged version of Criollo Blanco. It is the next chapter in the experiment — rare agave, multiple maturation stages, years of blending trials and one of tequila’s most fascinating producers revisiting one of her greatest creations.
