Bruichladdich 30 Year Old – Re/Define
Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky | 30 Years Old | 43.2% ABV | Bourbon Cask Matured | Natural Colour | Non-Chill Filtered
Bruichladdich 30 Year Old Re/Define is more than a beautifully mature Islay single malt—it is a liquid record of one of the most important chapters in Bruichladdich’s history.
In 1994, Bruichladdich Distillery was mothballed and production fell silent. For the years that followed, its warehouses remained filled with slowly maturing whisky, watched over by just two members of staff. The distillery would not produce spirit again until its celebrated resurrection in 2001.
This remarkable 30 Year Old is drawn from casks distilled before that renaissance, preserving a direct connection to Bruichladdich’s earlier era.
Bourbon Cask Maturation
The whisky was matured entirely in American oak bourbon casks.
50% remained in refill bourbon hogsheads throughout its maturation, allowing the distillery character to develop slowly and elegantly.
The remaining 50% was transferred after 20 years from refill casks into fresh bourbon casks, introducing additional layers of vanilla, coconut, toasted oak and sweetness.
The two parcels were eventually brought together and allowed to marry for a further three months in refill bourbon barrels, creating a whisky of remarkable balance, maturity and depth.
Bottled at 43.2% ABV, Bruichladdich 30 Year Old is presented as the distillery intended: natural colour and non-chill filtered.
Tasting Notes
Nose
Elegant and beautifully mature. Gentle oak opens into coconut, wild gorse flowers, Brazil nuts and vanilla. Floral notes of geranium and rose mingle with pear drops and candied lemon, followed by soft spice, cinnamon and Bruichladdich’s distinctive maritime character.
Palate
Delicate toasted oak leads into light orchard fruits, honey and fudge, with a subtle touch of leather. Given time in the glass, the whisky becomes increasingly floral and complex. American oak lends softness and richness while a delicate saline quality recalls the fresh sea air of Islay.
Finish
Long, composed and unmistakably coastal. A vibrant touch of sea salt balances mature oak, soft vanilla and lingering sweet coconut.
A Whisky From Bruichladdich’s Lost Years
What makes this release particularly compelling is its provenance. These casks survived Bruichladdich’s years of silence and continued to mature on Islay while the future of the distillery remained uncertain.
Three decades later, they offer a rare opportunity to experience pre-closure Bruichladdich at extraordinary maturity—unpeated, bourbon-cask driven and shaped by its long maturation beside the Atlantic.
Re/Define Packaging
Bruichladdich has also used this landmark release to rethink the traditional presentation of ultra-aged Scotch whisky.
The newly designed bottle is made using an average of 60% recycled glass and deliberately uses less glass than the heavy bottles commonly associated with luxury whisky.
Its distinctive outer packaging is made from fully recyclable molded paper pulp, formed specifically around the bottle. The approach reflects Bruichladdich’s philosophy of using less material, using better materials, and allowing the whisky itself—not excessive packaging—to define luxury.
